Counselling for Anxiety and Stress

Stress has become such a negative word these days and many of us aren’t aware that small amounts of stress are actually necessary at times. A short burst of stress can help you to be more motivated, focused, and productive when completing a task; it can also give you an edge and spur you on to do well in competitions or tests. When you experience a stressful situation your body produces adrenaline and cortisol, boosting your heart rate and ensuring that essential supplies of glucose and oxygen reach your brain and your muscles ready for fight or flight.

However, too much stress can overload the body with cortisol, and over a sustained period of time this excess cortisol can begin to have a detrimental effect on your body, producing the following physiological and psychological symptoms:

  • Fatigue, lethargy, and aches and pains
  • Digestive problems including diarrhoea, constipation, and nausea
  • Chest pains and a rapid heartbeat
  • Panic attacks, palpitations, and hyperventilation
  • Insomnia or hypersomnia
  • Loss of sexual desire or ability
  • Lowered immune system leading to frequent colds and infections
  • Nervousness and shaking
  • Difficulty relaxing, and feeling frustrated and agitated
  • Feeling overwhelmed, like you’re losing control

How can we help you?

If you are feeling overwhelmed with life, and certain situations trigger a feeling of fear and anxiety, we can help. At The Worsley Centre we offer professional counselling and psychotherapy for anxiety and stress, providing you with a safe and confidential space in which to explore your feelings and develop coping mechanisms to manage and control the causes and symptoms of your stress and anxiety.
Therapy can help you to develop better internal resources and help you to understand how to support and look after yourself better. For example, we may teach you breathing exercises, relaxation methods, and grounding techniques to help you cope with your anxiety and stress before it begins to overwhelm you.

In addition to this, therapy can also help you develop better external support too; improving your support network from friends, family, and work environments by assisting them in understanding what you are going through. If your support network to understand your triggers they can help you avoid them or cope with them as they happen.
